The Incredible Shrinking Studio
Becoming a father changed the organizational principles of my studio. I need a system that powers up and down effortlessly, and I don't want to turn on stuff I'm not going to use - especially gear that takes time to warm up.
SoftSynths play an increasingly prominent role in my setup due to their convenience. MachFive and MX4 have replaced a number of synthesizers so my primary system is smaller. I purchased a shorter rack so I can use the space directly underneath the cathedral ceiling, which was hindering placement options of the tall rack.
The Nord Modular G2 is a recent aquisition and serves as a compact controller keyboard in addition to scratching the modular itch without powering on a big rack.
The Mackie Big Knob replaces the 2408mk3 I was using as a volume control and headphone amplifier. The Mackie Big Knob is larger, heavier, better constructed than I expected it to be. You really have to feel it to appreciate. Removing the 2408 also cleans up unused channels in the CueMix console, so my system is simpler to understand.
Analog gear has been grouped and relocated on the other side of the room. Balanced audio tie lines link the patchbays and USB links the MIDI interfaces. One aspect that has grown a bit is my modular, which sprouted another 6U frame to house the additional odd modules I've collected.
