The following is an account of my activities while I was working on the archetribe project. The initial purpose of the diary was to serve as a psychological device to keep me on schedule, but it evolved into something more.

A few years ago, I remember reading (either Andrew Weil or Barry Sears), that food should be considered a drug and what you eat determines how you will feel for the next 6-8 hours. I believe the same could be said for media. The media I ingest may affect the music I produce, so I have made note of the movies and books I have consumed during this time period. Medialchemy.

The Story up to this point…

I came across Jamal’s amazing doumbek work on mp3.com. I contacted him via email and asked if he would be interested in a collaboration. I proposed that we put together a CD, and sell it on amazon.

The backing tracks I created were simple compositional spines designed to inspire the percussionist for his overdubs. Sometimes they started as short sequences, others were the algorithmic output of some of my Max projects and still others might have been some audio phrases I was working on with guitar and Chapman Stick. I transferred the tracks onto an Alesis ADAT, and stuck them in the mail while I involved myself in an ill fated movie project.

The tapes arrived back from Jamal in April 2001. It took some amount of busy work to transfer the tracks into my workstation, but by early May, I found myself ready to get down to business. This is where the journal begins.
